Radiology compensation is volume math: studies read, times a conversion factor, measured against a threshold — and all three terms are set by the contract, not the market. The same headline salary can sit on top of a generous worklist or an unreachable bonus gate, and in private practice the partnership track is worth more than any first-year number. These are the levers where that math actually moves.
Put the partnership track in writing
The step from employee to partner is the largest single income move in private-practice radiology, which is why vague tracks have a way of stretching. A strong contract states the track length, objective advancement criteria, and the buy-in methodology, and discloses partner-level economics before you sign. Ask what happens to your track if the group is sold or merges — silence on that point favors the group.
Lock down how wRVUs are counted
Two contracts with identical conversion factors can pay very differently depending on which wRVU schedule applies and what earns credit. Stronger language references the current published wRVU schedule with annual updates and grants credit for addenda, procedures, consults, and tumor-board time instead of treating them as free labor. An internally modified schedule is a quiet discount on every study you read.
Price after-hours work separately
When nights, weekends, and tele shifts are blended into the same conversion factor as weekday work, the hardest hours subsidize the easiest. A stronger structure pays a defined differential or per-study rate for off-hours reads and counts them at full credit toward any productivity threshold. If extra shifts are offered internally, the contract should state that rate too — otherwise you are negotiating from zero every time.
Treat vacation weeks as compensation
Radiology has some of the widest time-off spreads in medicine, so two identical salaries can differ meaningfully in pay per week worked — an extra week off at the same salary is roughly a two percent raise. Strong terms put the weeks in the contract itself rather than in a revisable policy manual, and pro-rate any volume or wRVU threshold for approved leave. Without pro-ration, taking your vacation can quietly cost you your bonus.

How does a radiology partnership buy-in usually work?
Most tracks run one to three years of employment before a partnership vote, followed by a buy-in paid up front or withheld from partner distributions over several years. The terms worth scrutinizing are whether advancement criteria are objective or discretionary, how the buy-in price is calculated, and how large the gap is between employee and partner income. Get the methodology in writing before you sign — a track described only verbally is a track that can move.
Is my wRVU threshold reasonable for radiology?
Compare it against published compensation data for your modality mix, not against a single national number — a mammography-heavy worklist and a cross-sectional one generate wRVUs at very different rates. Also confirm what counts toward the threshold: if tele shifts, addenda, or procedures earn no credit, the effective bar is higher than the stated one. A threshold you can only reach with a perfect case mix is a bonus in name only.
How is teleradiology paid compared to on-site work?
Tele work is typically paid per study, per shift, or per wRVU, and the structure matters more than the headline rate. A per-study rate means the worklist mix drives your income, so ask what share of studies are plain films versus cross-sectional and what volume a typical shift carries. Confirm who provides the workstation and state licenses, and whether tele reads earn the same credit as on-site reads under any bonus formula.
